Roughly 55 people experience homelessness in Manistee County at any given time. The top three primary causes of homelessness are the lack of affordable housing, poverty, and unemployment or underemployment. More than 771,000 people experience homelessness on any given night in the U.S. About 60% of people experiencing homelessness stay in sheltered locations like emergency shelters or transitional housing. The remaining 40% are "unsheltered," sleeping in places not meant for human habitation, such as tents, cars, or on the streets.
